Victory over Perfection
Perfection is not for us. That’s a big, tough statement to think about. Yet, the search for earthly perfection leads to false identity. We create a fake personality the more we strive. Perfection is not a title you can place on yourself. Perfection is a character trait of God. He is perfect in all His ways. He has created beautiful things. He acts with perfect authority, extending justice, grace, mercy, and love. What does God say about perfection? What is God’s truth?
Perfection is not for us here on earth. It is for God. Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “As for the Rock, His work is perfect, for all his ways are just. He is a reliable God who is never unjust, He is fair and upright.” Everything God does is perfect. In His perfect creativity, He created the heavens and the earth and has dominion over it all. In His perfect presence, there is joy and peace. In His perfect love, He sacrificed the life of His One and Only Son. In His perfect actions, He works all things out for His glory. In His perfect reliability, you can have confidence, He is there for you.
“So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48) Perfection for humans is a state of being. “Be perfect” means work on it in light of God’s perfection. It is a process in which you recognize your limitations, your mortality, your capacity to love, even your small ability to control. Knowing that you are sinful and imperfect should drive you to seek out the God of Perfection. The desire to be more like, striving to put His perfection on display in your life. Perfection for God is a defining character trait. He already is perfect.

Prayer
God, remind me of Your perfection. Remind me of Your goodness. You are perfect and I am not. Forgive me for the times when I strive with unrealistic ideals and put myself above You. Even when I mess-up, remind me, I’m growing in Your likeness. Lord, help me to desire less of me and more of You. Today, may I remember You, The Author and Perfecter of my faith. Amen.
